Wednesday being the last date to file nominations for Delhi Assembly elections, it would be a busy day for the electoral offices across Delhi. The action will start right in the morning with BJP chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi filing her nomination from Krishna Nagar constituency in East Delhi. Before filing nomination Bedi will participate in a road show starting at 10 AM in Krishna Nagar, which would end after reaching the electoral office. Along with Bedi, Union Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay and East Delhi MP Mahesh Giri would also be present.
Krishna Nagar is a BJP stronghold, a seat held by Dr Harsh Vardhan before he became MP in 2014. He was five times MLA from the constituency ever since the first Assembly elections took place in Delhi in 1993. This could be an easy ride for Bedi as it is considered one of the safest seats of the BJP.
Another high profile nomination would be of Ajay Maken of Congress who has just been given the charge of party campaigns in Delhi. Maken would file his nomination from Delhi Sadar. The party is projecting him as their leader in Delhi sidelining former chief minister Sheila Dixit and current Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely.
Earlier Lovely’s name was announced as a candidate from Gandhi Nagar, a constituency which he represents in the current Assembly. But yesterday the party decided to withdraw his candidature as he would devote more time to the organization. It was an idea floated by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi that state Congress presidents should not fight elections to concentrate more on the party work. Today Congress has announced Surender Prakash Sharma as party candidate from Gandhi Nagar. Sharma currently is a block president.
Apart from these two, other prominent faces of Delhi such as Jagdish Mukhi, Krishna Tirath, Binod Kumar Binny will also file their nominations tomorrow. While Mukhi is contesting from his earlier seat Janakpuri, Tirath who joined the BJP on Monday from Congress has been fielded from Patel Nagar. Binny won from Laxmi Nagar constituency in December 2013 on an AAP ticket. Now he has been fielded against Manish Sisodia in Patparganj by the BJP.
AAP leader Manish Sisodia has already filed his nomination.
The assembly elections are to be held on 7 February. The results will be declared on 10 February.
