Bengal’s police chief Bhupinder Singh is poised to become godfather to children of a policeman slain by Maoists. The director general of police has appealed to senior officers to follow suit. Singh, and his colleagues, will take care of all expenses, including education, of these children. “The idea is to let them know they have someone in the force to help them out with everything,” says Singh. He wants the ‘godfathers’ to visit their wards in school, monitor their education and celebrate their birthdays. His appeal has been sent to all officers from the ranks of Superintendent of Police upwards.
