Jaggi Vasudev, 61, Spiritual Leader
Open 19 Jul, 2019
You get an indication of the change in the status of Jaggi Vasudev in the trajectory of his television appearances. From being one more face on primetime discussion panels not too far back, entire programmes are devoted to his solo interviews. Once Sri Sri Ravi Shankar reigned as the guru of the urban, English-speaking India; the Sadhguru, as Vasudev is known, has now occupied the throne. Despite being based in Coimbatore, he is ubiquitous at elite public and private events in Mumbai and Delhi. He is also a social media phenomenon, amplifying his influence, especially among young Indians seeking spiritual direction. In recent times, he has shown a tendency to identify with the politics of the Hindu right, which has made him a favourite with the establishment.
