Éva Valicsek, 22, entered a student design competition in Hungary, and came up with this collapsible egg carton after six months of brainstorming. She shared her designs with Open. Valicsek’s egg carton is made of a single piece of cardboard, instead of the usual flapped carton of paper, plastic or Styrofoam, that’s bent accordian-style and with oval cutouts for cradling eggs. The top is open for easy access, but the contents are held in place by a rubber band at each end. The cartons are recyclable, stackable, and constructed with the minimal amount of material. They’re stylish too. Valicsek reveals that she has got an industrial offer to buy her designs, but is still undecided. But “publisher Gestalten liked the concept and my eggbox is being featured in the next edition of Box and Labelled,” she says.
