You are an active Facebooker, frequently uploading photographs, even more frequently updating your status. And yet, you find yourself being ‘unfriended’ on the social networking site at a furious pace. Now, a study by a PhD student at Colorado University, Christopher Sibona, tells you why. After surveying 1,500 Facebook users, Sibona concluded that frequent posts about nothing in essence were likely to lead to a severance of online ties. “The 100th post about your favourite band is no longer interesting,” he says. He also found that talking about religion and politics is likely to lose you friends. This phenomenon was so prevalent that the New Oxford American Dictionary selected ‘unfriend’ as its Word of the Year for 2009.
