India may soon have a law to tackle the critical problem of electronic waste or e-waste. This includes waste from gadgets like computers, TVs and cellphones. Toxics Link, an environmental NGO, says the new law could help monitor trade in e-waste and reduce illegal imports. The NGO says India generates nearly 400,000 tonnes of e-waste a year. And, it is also a favoured dumping ground for other countries’ e-garbage, though such exports are banned. Under the new guidelines, both producers and users will be responsible for whatever e-waste is produced, and violators will be penalised.
