Last week at a press conference in Kolkata, West Bengal forest minister Ananta Ray announced that the state has too much wildlife, and that he has a strategy to deal with the problem. “We have planned three things,” he outlined. “They could be sterilised to control their population. We could transfer the excess population from forests to zoos. We also have the option of selling them to private individuals. We have received applications from a few interested parties,” said Ray. He conceded, though, that the chances of his ideas being accepted by the Centre were slim. “The elephant is our national animal. It remains to be seen if the Centre allows it.” National animal—the elephant. Really, minister?
