Uttama Villain
Ugly Rants in the Name of Faith
Open Open 09 Apr, 2015
The Hindu Loony fringe has brought enough embarrassment for the Modi Government. They need to be restrained from obstructing freedom of expression through rants and offensive comments. The latest from these self-styled keepers of the Hindu faith is to call for a ban on the film Uttama Villain, a Tamil drama starring actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan, on allegations that the movie is disrespectful to Hindus. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) claims that a song in it, Iraniyan Nadagam, will hurt devotees of Lord Vishnu, for it downplays a conversation between the Vishnu devotee Prahalad and the demon Hiranyakashipu, reports suggest.
The Shiv Sena is no better. It has moved a privilege motion in the Maharashtra Assembly against writer Shobhaa De for allegedly insulting the Legislative Assembly, the Marathi language and Maharashtrians . All she did was criticise the state government’s decision to force multiplexes to screen Marathi films at prime time.
