The Intelligence Bureau recently issued an alert that terrorists plan to strike Mumbai from a plane that will take off from Hubli Airport. In a show of strength and zeal against terrorism, the local police mobilised nearly 200 policemen and commandos and completely overran the airport in Hubli. Incidentally, that airport handles only two scheduled flights a day. In their fervour, the police completely overlooked two other airports within a 200 km radius of Hubli Airport. The police have no explanation for why these two potential threats did not attract similar scrutiny. One of these is a very active private airport owned by steel giant Jindal and the other is an old airstrip run by the Airports Authority of India.
