The Prime Minister has unambiguously said that his government will not allow violence against any religion on any pretext. Addressing a meeting in New Delhi, attended largely by Christian community leaders, Narendra Modi also said that his government would ensure that everyone has the right to retain or adopt any religion of his or her choice without coercion or undue influence.
He said that equal respect for all faiths is part of the country’s ancient cultural traditions. “And that is how it became an integral part of the Constitution. Our Constitution did not evolve in a vacuum,” he told his audience. The Prime Minister also said that he would not allow anything to disrupt his development agenda. For, hate-mongering, fatwas and pastoral letters will only sharpen social fault lines and undermine the country’s economy and overall well-being. This decisive statement from the Prime Minister is good news and deserves to be welcomed.
