Bangalore’s civic body has resolved to name a street after Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for winning the World Cup. This is the third time a cricketer has been honoured this way. After leggie Anil Kumble achieved a rare perfect ten wickets in an innings, Bangalore’s famous landmark on MG Road, Oriental Circle, was renamed Anil Kumble Circle. The choice was apt too, considering that the cricket stadium is just a stone’s throw away. Former Indian vice-captain and ‘cut’ master Gundappa Vishwanath too has a similar distinction, with an underpass named after him. Dhoni will have to settle for a lesser known landmark in south Bangalore, where the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has come up with a list of roads that can be named after him. The naming ceremony is expected to take place during the forthcoming Indian Premier League tournament when the Indian captain is expected to be in the city to play a few matches.
