The skies above River Sabarmati’s banks were laden with kites as the 20th international kite festival, Uttarayan, began in Gujarat earlier this week. With nearly 225 participants from 34 countries and Indian states, the festival saw the entire city of Ahmedabad on the terraces flying kites of various shapes, sizes and colours. “Uttarayan is usually celebrated around the beginning of the Hindu New Year or Makar Sankranti. This year, we saw participation from countries like Lithuania, Japan, UK, Indonesia and Malaysia,” says Chaula Kuruva, head of publicity with the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat. The festival, which ends Friday, has been dedicated to the environment. Each year, the festival draws kite enthusiasts who start preparing from November onwards.
