God’s Own Country has declared itself GM-free. The Kerala state government has decided to prohibit the use of GM seeds on any piece of cultivable land, whether a farm or just a kitchen garden. This while the Government of India is still doing a case-by-case assessment of the innovation. This is reprieve for the slender green Mararikulam brinjal, once a favourite of royals in the state. In fact, in an assertion of dominion, Mararikulam even plans to apply for Geographical Indicator status.
