While the US was prompt in its tributes to Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu on his demise, the Chinese envoy to Delhi, Zhang Yan, was behind many others in issuing a condolence statement. Yan was expected at Basu’s funeral in Kolkata but only the consul-general, Mao Siwei, put in a perfunctory appearance. In contrast, his US counterpart Beth Payne spent much time at the funeral.
