The impact of educational institutions on livelihood generation is often underestimated, yet the case of KIIT and KISS in Odisha exemplifies how academia can drive largescale livelihood transformation. KIIT and KISS have created job opportunities and catalyzed entrepreneurial growth and self-sufficiency by integrating education with economic empowerment. KIIT has demonstrated that universities can also be powerful economic engines, directly influencing the livelihood landscape of an entire region. The university employs over 20,000 faculty and staff members, making it one of the largest job creators in Odisha. Additionally, contractual employment for campus operations doubles this number, ensuring stable income sources for thousands of families.
KIIT has created a thriving economic ecosystem, sustaining thousands of businesses like hostels, transport services, food vendors, laundries, bookstores, and mobile repair shops, all of which are dependent on the university community.

Yet, the real impact extends far beyond direct employment. With over 40,000 students, KIIT has created a thriving economic ecosystem, sustaining thousands of businesses like hostels, transport services, food vendors, laundries, bookstores, and mobile repair shops, all of which are dependent on the university community. The institution’s presence has also driven real estate growth, creating a rental economy that provides livelihood opportunities for local property owners and builders. KIIT’s strong focus on employability ensures that students are equipped with industry-relevant skills, facilitating their smooth transition into the workforce. Beyond traditional employment, KIIT has fostered an entrepreneurial ecosystem where students and alumni are encouraged to create rather than seek jobs. The KIIT-TBI (Technology Business Incubator) has supported hundreds of startups, many of which have provided direct and indirect employment in technology, agriculture, and social enterprise sectors .

While KIIT supports higher education and technical skill-building, KISS is a model of education-driven livelihood transformation at the grassroots level. By providing fully free, fully residential education to 40,000 tribal children, KISS ensures that even the most marginalized communities gain access to economic mobility. Many alumni return to their villages as teachers, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, or government employees, fostering circular economic growth within their communities.

The impact of KIIT and KISS on livelihood extends beyond their students and employees. The influx of students from across India and the world has led to an increase in academic tourism, with parents, researchers, and conference attendees driving local businesses in the hospitality, food, and transport sectors. Additionally, KIIT’s numerous international and national conferences, sporting events, and cultural festivals generate seasonal employment, offering thousands of temporary jobs in event management, security, catering, and transportation.
As we look to the future, the KIIT-KISS model stands as an example of possibility, proving that education, when driven by compassion and vision, is the most sustainable tool for livelihood generation and economic prosperity.
