If Flash support is important to you, this is the tablet you should buy
I had had enough of tablet computers, with almost every company launching one. The tablet market has got further convoluted with HP withdrawing from the field. But the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 made me sit up and take notice.
The First Samsung Galaxy Tab was a 7-inch machine, and Samsung had insisted that it was the best format for a tablet. Well, this one is a 10.1-inch. It also supports Flash. Even though the internet is moving towards HTML5, Flash is important to most of us, be it while viewing Facebook videos or playing online games. All that multimedia will drain the battery, but it still manages 9 hours on a charge. And while its 10.1-inch screen is slightly bigger than the iPad’s, it is a tiny bit slimmer and about 36 gm lighter.
It runs on Android 3.1 and has the latest Chrome browser. But, while the market for Android apps is growing, it doesn’t have too much for large tablets. However, it lets you play Angry Birds—seamlessly and full-screen.
Its built-in gyroscope and accelerometer lets you control the apps by tilting and rotating the screen. There is a dedicated Sleep/Wake button, like on all Android phones, and a 3.5 mm jack too. The screen supports 1080p so you can watch videos in HD. Movies can also be watched straight off SD cards (with an optional accessory). You no longer have to convert the movies on the SD card or synchronise them through a PC.
There are two cameras, and the front-facing cam is 2 megapixel to let you video call in HD. The rear camera can shoot movies at 720p, and also has an LED flash.
The Touchwiz user interface is great and has all the features of the previous generation: Social Hub, Reader Hub, and Music Hub, so you won’t lose any content while migrating to it. You can use also most Google apps with its assisted GPS.
The Tab is a great buy. But it is also a fact that iPad outsells all Android tablets. Me? I’ll still go with an iPad.
