Edimax 3G Router

If you don’t like sharing wireless broadband sticks, this is what you need to buy.

I hate it when I and my wife have to carry our own mobile broadband sticks (like the ones offered by RComm and Tata Indicom) on our holidays. If there is only one stick, we resort to a jugaad (arrangement), and that leaves us both irritated. Though a lot of ‘Chinese imports’ are now available in India that let you share the mobile broadband over Wi-Fi, these either do not have proper service and support, or were sadly mis-sold by dealers and did not work in the end. Recently, Edimax launched its 3G router, the 6210n, that lets you share mobile broadband over Wi-Fi with people in your office or home. If you have a ‘wired broadband’ connection in office, you can also use this router like a regular Wi-Fi router. You can even choose your primary connection, so in case your first choice (e.g., wired broadband) is not available, the router will automatically switch to the wireless connection, allowing you to work seamlessly. The unit has an in-built rechargeable battery just like a phone, so you can use it in a car, train or anywhere else that your mobile phone can go. Though the internal battery lasts you only 1.5 hours, you can always plug it into the electrical outlet for a longer duration of working.

The black coloured router has five LEDs on the box, that give you the status of power, WPS and internet connection status. WPS is a great security feature, but not all your gadgets may support it. The built-in EZ Max wizard makes installing and using the modem a breeze. It also works easily with both RComm and Tata Indicom mobile broadband services. With future proof support of up to 3.5G mobile technologies, a built in firewall, and support for DMZ VPN pass-throughs, the Edimax router fits in easily both at home and the office.

The device is fairly small and easy to carry around, and can find a permanent space in your bag. As long as you are on the road, you can keep using it with your wireless broadband sticks and also share it with partners. The moment you have wired broadband, you can again switch back to the cheaper and faster internet and keep sharing it with them.
