If mutts could talk, they'd grumble about the boring slop and the dry food that clatters into their bowls. Gourmutts? They get to wiggle their whiskers at the meaty whiff of Bow Wow Biscotti and Chicken Blondies, when they come home freshly-baked from the Waggy Bag, a gourmet dog barkery in Mumbai. In a city where dog-food caterers and pizza boys whiz through the streets on scooters, founding dog nutritionist Kat Ferrara says, "I set up Waggy Bag three years ago to offer healing handmade meals with meat."

Trained in New York barkery, Kat puts together five orders a week for pet shops and individual customers. With therapeutic quality attested to by a vet and organic ingredients, besides looking irresistible, treats like chicken-cranberry muffins are also health-giving. Says Ferrara: "Few people know that 60 per cent of dogs suffer from chronic renal failure caused by wrong food." Yes. Some packaged food can cause kidney collapse.

To nurse ill dogs, like a five-year-old Bichon Frise with kidney trouble, Kat cooked curative Italian meals, pastas and a chicken loaf with supplements. Bop is now happily kicking up his heels in a park. Kat also bakes Yappy Birthday cakes, made with an organic cake mix and meat, frosted with dahi-peanut butter. Can somebody light the candles please?
