Pope Benedict XVI has asked priests to start blogging, and indeed, use all forms of social media to get the Christian word across. “The spread of multimedia communications and its rich ‘menu of options’ might make us think it sufficient simply to be present on the Web,” but priests are “challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources”, he said in a message prepared for the World Day of Communications. The Pope himself is quite tech-savvy, in the sense that the Vatican started a Youtube channel in 2009. There is also a portal called pope2you.net. However, the Pope has been critical of the internet and new media in the past, saying it exposes us to sex and violence and desensitises us to tragedy.
