News for the Newly Literate

In Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region, people are learning about political issues, governance and gender education through a newspaper produced and marketed by women. Khabar Lahariya, a project by Delhi-based NGO Nirantar, has empowered 15 Dalit, tribal and Muslim women, to enter a domain previously dominated by the educated and privileged. “We established Khabar Lahariya in Chitrakoot in 2002 to help newly literate women in the region sustain their skills,” says Shalini Joshi of Nirantar.

The paper is very popular and is distributed to over 20,000 readers. The founders are now planning to expand to three districts in Bihar as well.
