English classes being held at Tihar have become a big hit with the inmates.
Authorities at Tihar, India’s most famous prison complex much in the news for its record-breaking number of VIP inmates after a series of corruption scandals, are pleased at how their ‘pado aur padao’ programme is faring. Turns out, the English classes being held at Tihar have become a big hit with the inmates. “Nearly 400 prisoners have enrolled for the English classes. There is a lot of demand for English because it betters their job opportunities when they are released,” says Tihar spokesperson Sunil Gupta. The classes are handled by the English-speaking prisoners. Two French-speaking foreign nationals, he added, had also started French classes.
