Gujarat has become the first state in India to have a comprehensive coral atlas.
Gujarat has become the first state in India to have a comprehensive coral atlas. Prepared by the Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC) and the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Application and Geo Informatics, the atlas will help the government make informed policy decisions on the conservation of coral life. “The Gulf of Kutch happens to be the only place in India where one can find inter tidal corals. This means that during low tide, you can walk into the water and see coral life, whereas anywhere else you have to either dive or snorkel in deep waters,” says E Balaguruswamy, who recently retired as member secretary of the GEC and helped plan the project.
