In recent years, India has made significant economic progress, but the number of women entrepreneurs in the country remains remarkably low. Shockingly, women founders own just 6% of Indian startups, falling well below the average for several sub-Saharan African nations. This highlights the obstacles that women face in all areas of life and work due to family constraints and the patriarchal structure of society, despite their proven abilities in male-dominated fields.
Fortunately, I am blessed to have grown up in a household that values and supports women’s empowerment. My mother used to work in the bespoke luxury/high-end furniture industry, and I watched her go about her daily tasks without ever thinking of gender as a barrier to potential. My father, a construction business owner, and my mother are my inspiration and my first Gurus who kindled the entrepreneurial spirit in me.
After my marriage in 2006, I joined the MAYFAIR Group, one of the leading luxury hospitality brands in India, led by my father-in-law, Shri Dilip Ray. My architectural degree and prior experience in my mother’s business have been incredibly beneficial as I lead this prestigious brand. Over the past 17 years, I have watched the brand expand from a portfolio of 4 properties to 13 operational properties, with many projects under the pipeline.
As an entrepreneur, I believe that constant reading is crucial for success. Many people stop emphasizing reading and learning once they reach a certain position, but this is a mistake. We must realize that the more responsibility we have, the more we must read and learn to become more evolved and effective leaders. My father-in-law, Mr. Dilip Ray, the mastermind behind the MAYFAIR brand, remains an avid reader despite his success and fame.
MAYFAIR currently operates 13 properties in 11 destinations, with 7 more projects in the pipeline. My vision is for our brand to be prominently displayed on the map of our nation, with at least one property in every state. I also aim to expand our portfolio with magnificent places, so people recognize us as MAYFAIR Hotels and Resorts.
As someone who values women’s empowerment and believes in continuous learning, I take great pride in being a member of the MAYFAIR Group. I am committed to positioning it as one of India’s foremost luxury hospitality brands.
