The Future of Education

Covid years that started in the year 2019 and has been continuing since then, with recent news of a new variant Omicron by name reportedly raising its head again, has changed the general world-view and has affected both public and private space in an unprecedented way never thought before. All the industries, be it manufacturing or information technology or educational exchanges, have seen new innovations. The Ed-tech that was in a state of imagination or was growing slowly, all of a sudden, became important because education could not stop abruptly. On reflection, one finds a new paradigm that was set in motion because of the Covid-related pandemic. This paradigm is education through internet and innovations.
Human ingenuity is best revealed in the face of adversity. The growth of industry happens more during difficult times rather than times when things are still and quiet. The history of development of industry from 1.0 to 4.0 is worth recalling during these challenging times as they reinforce our faith in the continuing spirit of human development in practically all spheres.
What will future education look like? What new changes will we witness?
1. Blended learning, offline and online in different proportions depending on the subject, a combination of physical and digital “phygital” by name, will continue.
2. Curriculum and pedagogy will need frequent revision depending on market/ industry needs.
3. The conventional role of teachers will gradually change. Teachers will be more facilitators and mentors.
4. “Learn on your own” concept will make deep inroads in the education system.
5. Continuous education programme for teachers will be of paramount importance.
6. Project-based teaching and more research component will come into the syllabi.
7. Institutions will increasingly rely on technology and the examination process will undergo sea-change. Questions will be more probing and application-oriented and the traditional process of rote learning will vanish. Examinations will judge the thinking process of a student, not the ability to memorize.
There are many such possibilities and educators will face the challenge of continuous 360o innovations. Times will be really challenging and education will evolve through such challenges. No doubt, we will live in interesting times.
