Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, Ranchi founded by the philanthropist, industrialist Late Shri B.M. Birla in 1955, is entirely a residential campus sprawling over 780 acres of land and has the luxury of being at the confluence of the Subarnarekha and Jumar rivers in lush green forest landscape. BIT Mesra attained the status of a Deemed to be University in the year 1986,and is not only one of the oldest Institutes of Technology in the country but also is a pioneer in initiating disciplines like Space Engineering and Rocketry, Remote Sensing, and recently Quantitative Economics and Data Sciences. It was also a pioneer in the country to have established the first Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Park in the country, the process of which started in 1974. The Institute has consistently been ranked amongst the leading Technological Universities of the country. It offers academic programs in all major disciplines of Engineering and allied Sciences with over 600 faculty members and over 10,000 students spread across various campuses covering all three levels of tertiary education.

Institute has been actively pursuing research in a large number of emerging and classical fields of science and technology. It has state of art laboratory facilities including Central instrumentation and high-performance computing facility which are available to cater to the needs of the students. Faculty members are executing Research and Development projects which are funded by reputed national organizations such as ISRO, DST, DRDO, ARDB, BRNS, DBT, CSIR, AICTE, UGC etc. The institute has been publishing several books and more than 1000 research papers in SCI and SCOPUS indexed Journals every year.

BIT Mesra has a sports complex inside the campus which spreads over 25 acres of land. Everyday approximately five hundred students utilize the sports complex for PT Games classes and practice. The complex consists of a standard athletic track along with badminton hall, multi-gym hall, volleyball court, basketball court, hockey ground, football field, kabaddi court, netball court, kho – kho field, cricket field, lawn tennis court, gymnasium hall etc. Admission to all UG, PG and Ph.D. programs are based on National / Institute level competitive test & counselling / interviews. For B.Tech. & B.Arch. programs, admissions are based on JEE-Mains scoreand under the central counselling process by JoSAA / CSAB. This transparent process ensured good students from all over India which significantly contributed to the national diversity.
