According to a recent report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), India has gone up in the Global Innovation Index Ranking since 2015, finding the 57th place. The GII ranks countries based on 80 indicators. This strategic study looks in depth at the factors that may have caused this rise and the impediments. The exponential increase of science and engineering graduates in the country has largely contributed to this. However, the paradox lies in the improvement of the Indian Education system that has been indicated as the weakness or shortcoming to this growth.
Innovation is the cornerstone of all developmental activities in the world, the face of a Country’s progression towards advancement. Various other aspects influence these innovations; entrepreneurial efforts, political stability and more. What defines and underlines all factors and aspects is the need to transform academia and Universities, where the formal creation and consolidation of this process takes root.Role of Higher Education in shaping the future of the youth of the nation has suddenly catapulted to unimaginable heights. Application of education needs to change, Schools & Universities need to adopt a hands-on pragmatic learning approach. A few practices that Universities can engage in are centered on a culmination of thought-realization, and application. Changing pedagogy at Universities is not only important but mandatory, to stay relevant to times. REVA, a Private University in Bengaluru, has been the nucleus of many such activities that have a direct impact on global research and innovation and the future of students.
At REVA, learning has moved far above the curve, infusing skill-based education through a contemporary and dynamic curriculum designed by both academic and industry experts. Indulging students directly with the source material through practical learning, industry interface, live projects and technological engagement facilitates an enriching educational environment. Research, a quintessential culture of all Universities, is given primacy at REVA. Special emphasis on research that has practical application in real-world scenarios leads to the creation of Thought Leaders rather than mere service enablers. REVA has a bank of consumable ideas and facilities that lead to the direct output of workforce that become implementers of change; mentoring programs, incubation centers, hands-on learning, digitization all take students closer to becoming builders of a world we have envisioned.
REVA believes in the personal touch and fostering values in students. And instilling an ethical sense of answerability to the environment. This code of conduct in education along with transforming practices should be the foundation of all endeavors by Universities and the complex educational terrain of the country.
As Universities, we have become the nucleus of the most mobile and potent population of the world. Being home to this palpable energy, comes with immense responsibility, that of regarding and revering every student’s future. Today, every thought we sow, becomes the seed of tomorrow, we need to educate, without radicalizing, without silencing, without curbing but revolutionizing, giving them a voice and giving their ideas the perfect impetus. A balance must be achieved between what they know and how they can apply.
