Q. What is Robotic Surgery?
A. It is a ROBOT Assisted surgery which allows surgeon to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with Open/Laproscopic surgery. It provides 3-dimension view with great magnification, 360* rotation with wide range motion and precision.
Q. What are benefits of Robotic Surgery?
A. Patients are benefited by Less Blood Loss, Short Hospital Stay, No Scars & Quick Recovery. While it is beneficial for operating surgeon as there is less muscular strain, less surgical time, comfortable position and increased efficiency, which ultimately gives benefits to patient.
Q. What are the common surgeries performed by ROBOTICS?
A. Though Robotic is used in many specialities but mostly in Urology Surgery like Prostate Cancer, Kidney Sparing Cancer Surgery, Reconstructive Pyeloplasty, Ureteric Reimplantation, Urogynae Fistula and many more complex surgeries like Kidney Transplant, Neo Bladder reconstruction.
Q. How do you got trained in Urology & Robotic Surgery?
A. After doing MS Surgery from PGIMS Rohtak, I got selected for Urology, Robotics & Kidney Transplant super speciality training at NADIAD, where I spent 3 years for training & refined my surgical skills. Then I came back to Delhi and practicing all surgeries for more than 10 years now.
Q. What is current status of robots.
A. Now many companies are coming with different model. In latest version of Da Vinci Robots, it is possible to do multi quadarant surgery with better ergonomics. But still lack of tactile sensation remain major limitation of Robotics.
The future of Robotics in Urology is Bright & Exciting. We are proud to have this technology that enhances patient care and saves thousands of lives.
Share this on Q. What myths you want to clear about Robotic Surgery?
A. People think that Robotic Surgery can substitute human doctor while it is not so. It only facilitates human doctor’s to do better surgery.People think Robotic Surgery is costly, though initially it was costly but now it is cost effective as it reduces overall hospital stay and speeds up recovery, ultimately you can return to work faster.
Q. What do you think about training and switching from open to laproscopic and now to Robotic surgery in your practice.
A. Medical carrier is lengthy & challenging. Daily you learn something new and technology is progressing frequently. It is must to learn & practice latest technology to provide maximum benefit to your patient with world class facility. It is initially difficult and for patient’s perspective some resistance to go from open surgery to Laproscopic and now same happens with switching from Laproscopic to Robotic surgery. But in my practice we give all available options to patients with the risks and benefits involved. Finally it is the patient’s choice and sometimes you require all three modalities to complement each other for best outcomes.
