If you are a young legislator, keep your social networking skills at home. That is the message the Speaker of the Kerala Assembly has just given to Congress MLA VT Balram. The 33-year-old representative of Thrithala constituency tried to seek public opinion on a private bill in a rather innovative manner. He posted a private bill, prepared by him, on Facebook and a Google group of which he is an active member. The Facebook post was well received—with 187 comments, 187 ‘shares’ and more than 300 ‘likes’. The bill, aimed at the welfare of nurses and paramedical employees working in Kerala’s private sector, was to be moved by Balram in the next session. The Speaker was not impressed with Balram’s social networking and ruled that it was a breach of privilege. But no action has been initiated against the young MLA because he is, well, young.
