If the Doomsday Clock is to be believed, we have pushed back the prospect of certain annihilation by a full 1 minute, and it now reads 11.54 pm.
If the Doomsday Clock is to be believed, we have pushed back the prospect of certain annihilation by a full 1 minute, and it now reads 11.54 pm. The clock represents a serious effort to raise consciousness of how technological, nuclear and climatic threats can lead us to a doomsday scenario. So, in 1998 when India and Pakistan tested their nuclear bombs we moved closer to doomsday by five minutes and it read 11.51 pm. Since 1947, the clock has been adjusted 18 times. The culprits delaying our inevitable doom this time round are: a ‘growing political will’ to tackle both the ‘terror of nuclear weapons’ and ‘runaway climate change’.
