British politics rarely offers stability, but 10 Downing Street has at least one constant. Larry the Cat, Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, has survived every leadership crisis, Brexit battle, and cabinet reshuffle thrown at him since 2011. While prime ministers arrive with ambition and depart with varying degrees of dignity, Larry simply carries on. His longevity has turned him into something far greater than a pest controller. He is, at this point, a national institution.
Larry is the official Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office at 10 Downing Street. His primary duty, at least on paper, is pest control. In practice, he has become Britain's most durable political figure, outlasting governments that struggled to outlast their own budgets.
According to reports, Larry arrived at Downing Street in 2011, rehomed from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. It was an unlikely beginning for what would become one of the longest-serving residents in the history of British political life.
Six, at last count. Larry has seen off David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and Keir Starmer, each of whom passed through the famous black door while Larry remained firmly in place.
He did. Liz Truss's tenure was so brief that a lettuce became one of Britain's most discussed political commentators. Larry, reportedly unbothered, outlasted both the prime minister and the vegetable.

Larry's parody account on X recently posted that he had accepted Keir Starmer's resignation as his chief servant and had invited Andy Burnham to present his case, specifically the number of meals per day he would provide. The post captured, in typical deadpan fashion, exactly why the account has become essential reading during every British leadership cycle.
Officially, pest control. Unofficially, he has become 10 Downing Street's furry historian, present for Brexit battles, leadership contests, and enough political scandal to keep constitutional experts permanently caffeinated.
He is trusted because he’s never broken a promise, never resigned under pressure, and never called a surprise press conference. In a country that has had more prime ministers than stable governments in recent memory, Larry the Cat represents something remarkably rare. Consistency.
Governments may rise and fall. Larry, meanwhile, simply carries on.
