A routine prayer gathering at a gurdwara in western Germany spiralled into chaos after a long-simmering internal dispute exploded into violence, forcing a large-scale police intervention and leaving worshippers shaken.
A violent confrontation involving more than 40 individuals erupted at the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Moers, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, on Sunday. According to German newspaper Bild, the situation escalated so rapidly that specialised tactical police units had to be deployed to restore order.
The clash reportedly began shortly before a scheduled prayer service, catching many worshippers off guard.

Eyewitness accounts paint a disturbing picture of the sudden escalation. A 56-year-old witness told Bild, “Shortly before the prayer service, attackers used pepper spray, then one fired a pistol. I also saw knives.”
Visuals circulating on social media show scenes of chaos within the gurdwara premises, with individuals allegedly wielding sharp objects, including knives and kirpans.
The unrest intensified quickly, leading to panic among those present.
Authorities responded with significant force. Nearly 100 officers were dispatched, including a Special Task Force (SEK) unit from Dusseldorf. A helicopter was also deployed after reports suggested that shots had been fired.

Police later recovered cartridge cases at the scene, raising suspicions that a blank-firing weapon may have been used. However, the firearm itself has not yet been located.
One individual has been taken into custody, while investigators continue to search for others involved.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the violence stems from long-standing disagreements over the gurdwara’s management and finances.
According to the same eyewitness, “The background is a dispute between former committee members and the current ones. It also involves money belonging to the community. There have been problems and trouble for quite some time. But mainly it's about influence and who has the say here in the temple.”
The conflict reportedly revolves around the election of a new governing board and control over community assets.
The sudden outbreak of violence triggered panic among the congregation. Witnesses described scenes of distress as people rushed to escape the premises.
According to accounts cited by Neue Ruhr Zeitung (NRZ), one witness said, “Several people ran out of the building, some of them barefoot.”
Emergency medical teams treated multiple individuals at the scene, most of whom suffered head injuries.
German authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into both the violent incident and the underlying disputes.
A police spokesperson told NRZ that the enquiry is “proceeding in all directions,” indicating that both criminal actions and governance issues within the gurdwara are under scrutiny.
