The United States has escalated its strategic and political pressure on Iran as tensions intensify across West Asia. Washington has announced the deployment of a major amphibious strike group led by the USS Tripoli to waters near the Strait of Hormuz while simultaneously unveiling a USD 10 million reward for information about Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. The twin moves come as regional hostilities enter their second week, raising concerns over maritime security and global energy flows.
The United States is sending an amphibious ready group led by the USS Tripoli along with around 2,500 Marines to West Asia as tensions escalate near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to a report citing a defence official, the Pentagon is deploying the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group together with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, a formation capable of rapid-response combat operations. The ship, currently based in Japan, is expected to reach the US Central Command’s area of responsibility in one to two weeks.
The Marines will reinforce a large American presence already operating across the region. Reports indicate that more than 50,000 US troops are currently stationed throughout West Asia.
Security concerns in the region have intensified following recent attacks linked to Iran near the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most strategically critical maritime corridors. The narrow waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the northern Arabian Sea and serves as a vital artery for global energy supplies, with roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments passing through it on commercial tankers.

Recent tensions have already disrupted maritime traffic. Tanker movements slowed after strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets in late February.
The USS Tripoli is part of the expeditionary strike group operating under the United States Seventh Fleet. The group includes the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, the guided missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls and the destroyer USS Rafael Peralta, alongside the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Nearly the size of an aircraft carrier, the ship can carry dozens of helicopters, MV-22 Osprey aircraft and F-35B Joint Strike Fighter jets, as well as more than 1,700 Marines and their equipment. Amphibious assault ships like the USS Tripoli are designed to operate close to shore and support landing operations by deploying aircraft and landing craft to move troops and equipment from sea to land.
Alongside the military deployment, the United States has also stepped up political pressure on Tehran by announcing a bounty of USD 10 million for intelligence related to Mojtaba Khamenei and several senior Iranian officials.
The reward was issued through the Rewards for Justice initiative run by the US State Department. The programme offers financial incentives for information that helps identify or locate individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism targeting the United States.
In addition to Khamenei, the updated list includes Iran’s interior minister and the minister of intelligence and security.
In a social media update, Rewards for Justice stated, "Got information on these Iranian terrorist leaders? Send us a tip. It could make you eligible for a reward and relocation."
The announcement follows an escalation in regional hostilities after coordinated US-Israeli strikes targeted Iranian military installations. Those strikes triggered retaliatory missile and drone attacks across the Middle East on February 28.
As the crisis deepens, US President Donald Trump has taken an increasingly confrontational tone toward Tehran.
Trump claimed that the Iranian government is "about to surrender" amid the ongoing conflict. According to officials cited in reports, he made the remark during a virtual summit with leaders of the Group of Seven nations while discussing the outcome of Operation “Epic Fury.”
During the discussions, the US President reportedly told allies that he had "got rid of a cancer that was threatening us all."
As drone and missile exchanges continue across the region, Trump also launched a sharp verbal attack on Iran’s leadership, describing them as "deranged scumbags."
He further remarked that it would be a "great honour" to eliminate them. Discussing the broader military campaign, the President asserted that Washington is conducting operations to "destroy the terrorist regime of Iran" through military means.
With military deployments intensifying and diplomatic rhetoric hardening, the developments underscore how the confrontation between Washington and Tehran is rapidly expanding across both the battlefield and the political arena.
