Keralam has witnessed a major political turnaround with Congress leader VD Satheesan taking oath as Chief Minister, bringing the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) back to power after ten years.
The swearing-in ceremony, administered by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, marked the end of the Left Democratic Front’s decade-long rule.
The event drew national attention, with senior Congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi in attendance. Leaders from other states, such as Siddaramaiah and Revanth Reddy, also participated, underlining the broader political significance of the victory.
One of the most striking aspects of the transition was the speed of government formation. Satheesan highlighted that the entire formality was completed within 24 hours—unprecedented in Kerala’s political history.
“We have discussed with the coalition partners... and within 24 hours, we have completed the entire process,” Satheesan said. “We have to consider the social and regional balance and the representation of women and Dalit representation... We have included two members from the SC, and women's representation has been ensured.”
Despite having a strong pool of leaders, he acknowledged the constraints in cabinet selection:
“We have 63 MLAs, some are more eligible than others, but unfortunately, we have to consider the social and regional balance and the representation of women and Dalit representation. We are not able to include all the eligible persons in the Cabinet. We have included two members from the SC, and women's representation has been ensured,” he said.

The 20-member Cabinet includes prominent leaders like Ramesh Chennithala and K Muraleedharan, alongside representatives from allies such as the Indian Union Muslim League.
The UDF secured a decisive mandate in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 140 seats. The Congress emerged as the single-largest party with 63 seats, while the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by Pinarayi Vijayan, was reduced to 35 seats.
Satheesan himself reinforced his political dominance by winning from Paravur for the sixth consecutive time, securing 78,658 votes and defeating CPI candidate ET Taison Master by a margin of 20,600 votes. His long-standing connection with the constituency spans over 25 years.
The incoming government has committed to implementing five major guarantees announced during the campaign by Rahul Gandhi. These include free bus travel for women, financial assistance for college-going girls, enhanced welfare pensions, universal health insurance coverage, and interest-free loans for small businesses.
Senior leader Ramesh Chennithala affirmed that the government would move forward with these promises, signalling a welfare-focused governance agenda.
Born in 1964 near Kochi, Satheesan is a lawyer-turned-politician who began his journey through the Kerala Students Union and Youth Congress. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming Leader of the Opposition in 2021 after succeeding Ramesh Chennithala.
Known for his sharp criticism of the previous government, Satheesan emerged as the face of the UDF’s campaign, positioning himself as a credible alternative to the LDF leadership.
