54 days after she was tied to a tree and set ablaze, Punjabi influencer Manjeet Kaur is dead. What happened?

Until a few weeks ago, Manjeet Kaur was best known to her followers for her Instagram reels.

The 28-year-old influencer from the Chandigarh-Kharar region had built a sizeable online presence, with around 1.4 lakh followers on Instagram and a growing audience on YouTube. Her content largely revolved around lifestyle videos, beauty promotions and Punjabi music-based reels. She was also a mother to a seven-year-old son.

Today, however, her name is making headlines for a far more tragic reason.

What Happened to Manjeet Kaur?

According to complaints filed by her family, Manjeet was allegedly abducted on the night of July 3 after being called to Sector 34 in Chandigarh by two acquaintances identified as Shubhi and Pinda. Her mother alleged that the pair forced her into a vehicle and drove her to Morinda in Punjab.

What allegedly happened next has shocked even seasoned investigators.

The family claims Manjeet was assaulted, tied to a mulberry tree in a forested area near Morinda and then set on fire.

A friend reportedly reached the spot, extinguished the flames with a blanket and rushed her to hospital. She was initially treated in Morinda, later shifted to Mohali and eventually admitted to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh on July 9.

How Long Did She Fight for Her Life?

For 54 days.

Manjeet spent nearly two months battling severe burn injuries.

According to reports from The Times of India, she remained unconscious for weeks before briefly regaining consciousness in early August. Family members say she was able to recount details of the alleged attack during that period. Despite extensive treatment, her condition deteriorated and she died on August 26.

Her death transformed what had been an attempted murder investigation into a murder case.

Why Is the Case Triggering Questions About Police Handling?

The controversy is no longer only about the alleged attackers.
