The Indian Embassy in the United States has announced that the iconic Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., will host a major International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 celebration, underscoring India's continued efforts to promote yoga as a global tool for health, wellness, and cultural diplomacy.
The event forms part of a wider international campaign leading up to June 21, the date observed annually as the International Day of Yoga around the world.
In a post on social media platform X, the Indian Embassy invited yoga enthusiasts and practitioners to participate in the celebrations at one of America's most recognisable landmarks.
"We're celebrating #InternationalDayOfYoga2026 at the iconic Lincoln Memorial on Friday, June 19, 2026. Stay tuned for more details!" the embassy stated in its digital announcement.
The choice of venue reflects the growing visibility of yoga in the United States and highlights the role of landmark public spaces in spreading awareness about physical and mental well-being.
The embassy also highlighted a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi that captures the philosophy behind the practice.
"Yoga is the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, balance, and become whole again," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The global theme for this year's celebrations is "Yoga for Healthy Aging."
The initiative seeks to position yoga as an important tool for improving longevity, maintaining flexibility, supporting mental well-being, and encouraging preventive healthcare. Organisers aim to showcase how regular yoga practice can contribute to healthier lifestyles across different age groups.
A major highlight of this year's US celebrations will be the participation of Padma Shri HR Nagendra, president of Bengaluru's S-VYASA University and the yoga mentor who guides Prime Minister Modi's personal yoga practice.
Nagendra will headline the International Day of Yoga event at Times Square in New York on June 21. The annual gathering has evolved into one of the world's most visible Yoga Day celebrations, attracting thousands of participants from across the United States and beyond.
He will be accompanied by S-VYASA Vice Chancellor NK Manjunath.
Before the flagship Times Square event, Nagendra will inaugurate a three-day Yoga and Wellness Retreat at the YO1 Longevity and Health Resort in Monticello, New York, from June 12 to 14.
The retreat will feature yoga sessions, meditation programmes, and discussions focused on stress management, healthy ageing, and holistic wellness.
Among the notable speakers expected to participate are cardiologist Samin K Sharma, Director of Interventional Cardiology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and healthcare leader Raj Bansal, founder of one of the Accountable Care Organizations (ACO).
The visit has been organised at the invitation of the Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA), along with BRUHUD NY Seniors and Jaipur Foot USA.
These organisations have played a significant role in promoting yoga across the United States and integrating it into public life through events held at institutions and public venues.
A key figure in these efforts is Prem Bhandari, Chairman of Jaipur Foot USA and President of RANA New York. For more than a decade, he has helped organise yoga programmes at venues including the United Nations and Capitol Hill.
Acknowledging Bhandari's contribution, Nagendra said his efforts had helped bring "the timeless wisdom of yoga to people from all walks of life."
Bhandari described the upcoming visit as a landmark moment for the Indian-American community.
"Yoga is India's timeless gift to humanity -- one that the world formally celebrated when PM Modi's UN initiative established June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. After a decade of promoting yoga across the US with diplomatic missions and institutions, we are deeply honoured to welcome Padma Shri HR Nagendra and NK Manjunath to New York, whose visit will strengthen yoga education, research, and India-US cultural bonds."
The origins of International Day of Yoga can be traced to Prime Minister Modi's proposal at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014.
On December 11, 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The first global observance was held on June 21, 2015.
Since then, participation has expanded dramatically, with millions of people taking part in Yoga Day events across countries every year.
The annual Times Square celebration has become one of the most visible symbols of this global movement, reflecting yoga's transformation from an ancient wellness practice into a significant instrument of international cultural diplomacy.
Founded in Bengaluru, S-VYASA University is one of India's leading institutions dedicated to integrating yoga with modern scientific research.
The university offers academic programmes, conducts research into yoga's therapeutic benefits, and collaborates with hospitals, universities, and wellness organisations around the world.
Nagendra's upcoming visit also highlights S-VYASA's expanding international outreach. His previous visit to New York in 2018, also facilitated by Prem Bhandari, is regarded by the university as a milestone in its global engagement efforts.
The selection of the Lincoln Memorial and Times Square as key venues demonstrates yoga's growing influence in the United States and India's continued use of cultural diplomacy to strengthen international engagement.
With a focus on healthy aging, prominent yoga scholars, medical experts, and diaspora organisations coming together, International Day of Yoga 2026 is expected to reinforce yoga's role as a global movement promoting health, wellness, and cross-cultural understanding.
