Two powerful earthquakes struck western Venezuela on Wednesday evening, triggering building collapses, widespread panic, and fears of a major humanitarian disaster. Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage, while international leaders and officials have expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people.

Twin Quakes Trigger Widespread Destruction

The Venezuelan capital, Caracas, was shaken by two powerful earthquakes that struck the same region within minutes of each other, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The first earthquake, measuring 7.2 in magnitude, struck near San Felipe, approximately 284 kilometres west of Caracas, at 22:04 GMT. It was followed almost immediately by a second, stronger quake measuring 7.5 near Yumare, about 293 kilometres west of the capital.

According to the USGS, buildings collapsed following the tremors, and the agency warned of potentially catastrophic consequences.

"High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread," the USGS said.

The agency estimated that the eventual death toll could range between 10,000 and 100,000.

Meanwhile, India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported the event as a magnitude 6.8 earthquake at a shallow depth of 15 kilometres.

Global Leaders, Opposition Figures Express Solidarity

As information about casualties and damage continued to emerge, political leaders from across the region expressed support for Venezuela.

US Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar said, "Today my prayer is with the Venezuelan people. May God embrace the families affected by the earthquake, give strength to those facing pain, and protect every rescuer who today fights to save lives. Venezuela has demonstrated time and again the strength of its people. With faith and with God's help, it will also overcome this harsh trial."

President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador said, "Our hearts are with the people of Venezuela during these difficult times. We send them all our solidarity and our prayers. Strength Venezuela."

Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez said the back-to-back earthquakes had caused major destruction.

Nobel laureate Maria Corina Machado also offered prayers and support to those affected.

In a post on X, she said, "My heart, my infinite embrace, and my prayers are with every Venezuelan home in these hours of anguish.
