Taylor Swift, Ukraine and Russia's Wanted List: Why Conor Kennedy Is Suddenly Global News Again

Last Updated:
For years, Conor Kennedy was remembered as the Kennedy heir who briefly dated Taylor Swift. Today, he is making headlines for a far more extraordinary reason. The son of US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been placed on Russia's international wanted list after secretly fighting in Ukraine, turning a celebrity footnote into an international story involving war, politics and one of America's most famous families.

Conor Kennedy is now on Russia's international wanted list after Moscow accused him of serving as a mercenary for Ukraine. The charge stems from a decision he made in 2022, when he reportedly travelled to Ukraine and joined the country's International Legion, a military unit created for foreign volunteers fighting against Russia's invasion. According to NDTV, a Moscow court has authorised his arrest in absentia and he could face seven to ten years in prison if detained by Russian authorities.

So how did a former celebrity boyfriend end up at the centre of an international dispute?

Who Is Conor Kennedy?

Conor Kennedy, 32, is a member of one of America's most famous political dynasties.

He is the son of US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the grandson of former US Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the great-nephew of former US President John F. Kennedy. He studied law at Georgetown University and has largely stayed away from politics despite his family name.

For much of the public, however, Kennedy became famous for a different reason.

In 2012, he briefly dated Taylor Swift. Their relationship lasted only a few months but generated enormous media attention because of Swift's close association with the Kennedy family during that period.

After the relationship ended, Kennedy largely disappeared from celebrity headlines.

Until Ukraine.

Why Did Conor Kennedy Go to Ukraine?

In October 2022, Kennedy revealed in an Instagram post that he had secretly travelled to Ukraine after Russia's full-scale invasion.

According to his own account, he was deeply affected by images from the war and felt compelled to help. When he learned about Ukraine's International Legion, he said he immediately decided to enlist.

What makes the decision remarkable is that Kennedy had no prior military experience.

He later acknowledged that he was not a trained soldier and had entered a conflict zone despite having little military background. Yet he spent roughly two and a half months serving on Ukraine's northeastern front before returning to the United States.

Kennedy also said he deliberately concealed his plans.

He told very few people where he was going and avoided revealing his identity to most of those around him because he did not want special treatment because of his surname.

What Is Russia Accusing Him Of?

The current controversy revolves around how Russia classifies foreign volunteers fighting for Ukraine.

According to Russian court documents cited by multiple news organisations, Moscow's Basmanny District Court authorised Kennedy's arrest in absentia and accused him of participating in military operations as a mercenary. Under Russian law, the charge can carry a prison sentence of seven to ten years.

Russia has pursued similar cases against several foreign nationals who joined Ukrainian forces. In recent years, Moscow has also issued arrest warrants and wanted-list notices against foreign political figures and public personalities it views as hostile to Russian interests. Reuters has previously reported on comparable actions involving Western politicians and critics of the Kremlin.

It is important to note that Ukraine's International Legion was officially established by Kyiv to allow foreign volunteers to join Ukraine's defence effort. Kennedy has publicly described himself as a volunteer who fought alongside Ukrainian forces, while Russia characterises such fighters as mercenaries.

How Did Kennedy's Family Find Out?

Kennedy's family did not learn about his trip through a dramatic phone call from a battlefield.

Instead, suspicions were reportedly raised when his parents noticed credit-card activity in Poland and Ukraine during a period when he was supposedly elsewhere.

After he returned, Kennedy explained why he had gone.

His father, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., reportedly expressed concern about the secrecy but later said he was proud of his son's convictions.

Why Is This Story Bigger Than a Celebrity Headline?

The easiest version of this story is also the least interesting.

"Taylor Swift's ex-boyfriend wanted by Russia."

That headline writes itself.

But the real story is stranger.

A law student from one of America's most famous political families quietly travelled into a war zone, fought on the front lines of Europe's largest conflict since World War II, returned home, and years later found himself facing an arrest warrant from Moscow.

Some celebrity stories fade with time.

This one somehow became more dramatic.

Fourteen years after the photographs with Taylor Swift, Conor Kennedy is back in headlines. Not because of who he dated, but because of a decision he made on a battlefield thousands of miles away.
