US President Donald Trump has dramatically escalated his rhetoric against Iran, warning of fresh military action while also signalling a long-term objective of taking control of key Iranian oil and gas infrastructure.

The comments come amid continuing military exchanges between Washington and Tehran, even as diplomatic efforts to secure a peace agreement remain underway. Trump's latest statements have renewed concerns about the future of US-Iran relations, the security of energy supplies, and stability across the Middle East.

What did Trump say about new strikes on Iran?

In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that the United States would launch another round of attacks against Iran.

"The United States will be hitting Iran (Whose Navy, Air Force, Radar, Anti Aircraft, and all other forms of Defense, together with most of its offensive capability, are GONE!), VERY HARD TONIGHT."

The remarks followed previous US military strikes against Iranian targets and signalled Washington's willingness to continue military pressure while negotiations remain unresolved.

Trump had already hinted at renewed military action a day earlier while speaking in the Oval Office.

"We're going to be attacking them, attacking them very hard," he said. Referring to Iran's alleged downing of a US Apache helicopter, Trump added: "Based on the helicopter, I guess we have the right to do that."

He further stated: "We hit them hard yesterday. We're going to hit them again hard today, in case you miss it, in case you don't turn on your television set, and we'll see what happens with the deal."

Why is Kharg Island so important?

A major element of Trump's latest statement was his pledge to take control of Kharg Island, one of Iran's most strategically significant energy assets.

"At some point in the not too distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points, and assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets, much like we have with Venezuela, which is working out brilliantly for both Venezuela and the United States of America," he said.

Kharg Island serves as Iran's principal oil export terminal and is widely regarded as the backbone of the country's crude export system. Any disruption to operations there could have significant implications for Iran's economy and global oil markets.

Why is Trump linking Iran to Venezuela?

Trump repeatedly compared his proposed approach toward Iran's energy sector with what he described as successful US involvement in Venezuela.

By invoking Venezuela, Trump appeared to frame control over energy infrastructure as both a strategic and economic tool. The comparison suggests that Washington sees energy resources as a key source of leverage in its broader dealings with Tehran.

What military actions has the US already taken?

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces recently carried out additional "self-defence strikes" against Iranian targets.

The operations reportedly targeted military surveillance systems, communication networks and air-defence facilities that Washington said posed threats to US personnel and international shipping.

CENTCOM stated that US Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy units conducted precision strikes against targets linked to what it described as Iran's continuing aggression. American forces, it said, remain prepared for further action if necessary.

Are diplomatic talks still continuing?

Despite the escalating rhetoric and military exchanges, diplomatic channels have not been closed.

According to CNN, discussions between the United States and Iran remained on track following overnight negotiations. A diplomatic source familiar with the talks indicated that dialogue continued despite the latest exchange of strikes.

The situation highlights a paradox that has increasingly characterised the crisis: military escalation is occurring alongside efforts to negotiate a broader agreement.

What does this mean for the Middle East and global oil markets?

Trump's threats have heightened concerns about the possibility of a wider regional conflict. The focus on Kharg Island is particularly significant because of its role in global energy supplies.

Analysts have warned that any military action targeting major oil infrastructure could affect crude exports, shipping routes and energy prices. Markets have already reacted to developments surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit corridors.

What happens next?

The immediate focus will be on whether the United States follows through on Trump's threat of further strikes and how Iran chooses to respond.

At the same time, negotiators are still attempting to salvage a diplomatic agreement. The coming days are likely to determine whether the crisis moves toward a broader military confrontation or returns to a negotiated path.

For now, Washington is pursuing both pressure and diplomacy simultaneously, leaving the future of US-Iran relations highly uncertain.
