The arc of this conflict bends neither cleanly toward war nor toward peace, and Sunday made that abundantly clear.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps issued a deadline on Sunday for the United States military to end its blockade of Iranian ports, with Tehran warning that US President Donald Trump "must choose between an impossible military operation or a bad deal."
The ultimatum came even as Iran simultaneously conveyed a "multi-layered proposal" to Washington in an attempt to break the deadlock over peace talks, according to a senior official familiar with the development, as reported by news agency PTI.
Trump, however, signalled he remains far from persuaded.
The US President said he is not satisfied with Iran's new offer to end the West Asia conflict, and indicated that Washington is unlikely to accept any framework that does not include firm guarantees preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
The Pakistani official told PTI that the fresh Iranian proposal is a phased de-escalation framework, seeking to separate immediate conflict management from the more complex and long-standing dispute over Tehran's nuclear programme.
Pakistan is currently mediating the peace talks between the two sides. The Iran war, triggered by joint strikes by the US and Israel on February 28, has been on hold since April 8, with one round of peace talks having taken place in Islamabad since then.

While diplomats manoeuvred, the violence on the ground continued unabated.
An Israeli air raid on the municipality of Arab Salim in southern Lebanon's Nabatieh district killed at least one person and injured three others, including a child, according to a statement by Lebanon's Health Ministry carried by the state-run National News Agency.
In a separate incident, at least five people, including four paramedics, were wounded in an Israeli attack on the municipality of Srifa in southern Lebanon's Tyre district.
The Health Ministry said the air raid occurred next to a medical centre.
"The ministry reiterated its condemnation of these repeated attacks, and recalled Article 19 of the Geneva Convention, which states the need to ensure that medical facilities are protected from any danger caused by attacks in conflict zones, while the opposite is actually happening," the ministry said in a statement carried by Lebanon's state-run National News Agency.
On the West Bank, Israeli forces carried out a series of incursions into several towns and villages north of Tulkarem, including Saida, Attil, Ellar, and Deir al-Ghusun, as reported by the Wafa news agency.
Israeli settlers also began paving a road in the Palestinian town of Beit Awwa, west of Hebron. Separately, a 13-year-old Palestinian was injured after being assaulted by Israeli troops in the town of al-Ram, north of Jerusalem.
The gap between the negotiating table and the battlefield has rarely looked wider.
