When is the IPL 2027 retention deadline?

Before bidding begins, franchises must decide which players to retain and release. The deadline for submitting their final lists is November 15, 2026, giving teams just over a month to finalise their plans.

After the deadline, the IPL will circulate the registered player pool for franchises to shortlist. The final auction list, including the order of player sets, is expected to reach teams during the week before the event, according to ANI’s report.

The December auction will be the final mini-auction of the current squad-building cycle. A mega auction is expected ahead of the 2028 season, when franchises will enter a new phase of rebuilding.

Which major player trades have taken place ahead of IPL 2027?

Two high-profile trades have already reshaped squads. In June, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) traded captain Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals (DC), with wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav moving in the opposite direction. The IPL confirmed the deal on June 23, marking Pant’s return to the franchise where he spent nine seasons.

The latest confirmed trade came in October, when DC sent left-arm fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in exchange for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari. According to The Indian Express, Natarajan will join SRH at a revised fee of Rs 5 crore, while Ansari moves to DC at his existing fee of Rs 40 lakh.

The trading window remains an important tool for teams looking to strengthen specific departments before entering the auction.

When will IPL 2027 begin?

The BCCI has not yet announced the final schedule for the 2027 season. While an earlier planning window indicated a March 14 to May 30 tournament period, Saikia suggested after the board’s September annual general meeting that the season could begin towards the end of March.

The 2026 edition ended on May 31, with RCB defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets to defend their title, according to the IPL’s official match report.

Why is the 2028 mega auction significant?

The upcoming mini-auction is also a bridge to a major commercial milestone. The IPL’s current media-rights cycle covers the 2023–2027 seasons. In 2022, the BCCI sold those rights for Rs 48,390.32 crore, underlining the tournament’s enormous commercial value. The board has yet to issue the tender for the next cycle, which is expected to begin with the 2028 season.

For now, franchises must focus on December 16. Their decisions over the next few weeks will determine which players remain, which gaps need filling and how convincingly they can challenge RCB in IPL 2027.
