DR Congo supporter Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, widely recognised as the national team's famous "statue fan", once again drew attention during his country's FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K clash against Colombia in Mexico.

The supporter, who became a social media sensation during the Africa Cup of Nations, was seen backing DR Congo during their narrow 1-0 defeat on Tuesday.

Why is Michel Nkuka Known as the 'Statue Fan'?

Michel Nkuka's unique match-day ritual has made him one of the most recognisable supporters in African football.

According to ESPN FC's X handle, his stance is inspired by the memorial statue of DR Congo's first Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba in the capital, Kinshasa. The tribute has become his trademark while following the national team across major tournaments.

Nkuka rose to prominence during the Africa Cup of Nations by imitating the statue of Lumumba throughout matches. Standing motionless on a pedestal with his right hand raised, he maintained the pose for the entire duration of games, earning widespread attention online and becoming a symbol of passionate support for the Leopards.

How Did Colombia Defeat DR Congo?

While Nkuka's presence attracted attention in the stands, Colombia secured a crucial victory on the pitch to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

DR Congo threatened early through Edo Kayembe, whose long-range effort drifted wide before Colombia gradually assumed control of the contest.

Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced a string of important saves to keep his side in the game. He denied Jhon Arias, while Daniel Munoz and James Rodriguez were also frustrated as Colombia searched for an opener.

The South Americans continued to create opportunities, with Luis Diaz and Gustavo Puerta also testing Mpasi, who delivered an outstanding performance between the posts.

James Rodriguez Reaches a World Cup Milestone

The match also saw Colombia captain James Rodriguez achieve a notable statistical landmark.

According to OptaJose's X handle, James Rodriguez became the first Colombian player to create five goal-scoring opportunities in a World Cup match since Carlos Valderrama managed the same feat against England in 1998.

Colombia Finally Finds the Breakthrough

Despite DR Congo's resilience, Colombia eventually found the decisive goal in the second half.

Daniel Munoz scored through a deflected effort following excellent build-up play from substitute Jhon Cordoba. Although Luis Diaz later had two goals ruled out for offside, Colombia successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.

The victory confirmed Colombia's place among the top two teams in Group K ahead of their final group-stage encounter against Portugal.

What Next for DR Congo?

The defeat leaves DR Congo with work to do in their bid to reach the knockout stage.

The African side remains in contention for qualification but must defeat Uzbekistan in their final group match and rely on favourable results elsewhere to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

For now, however, Michel Nkuka's appearance has once again highlighted one of the tournament's most distinctive fan stories, ensuring that the DR Congo supporter remains a familiar and celebrated figure on football's biggest stage.
