Ronaldinho’s Shock Comeback at 46: Inside His Surprise Return to Football with Italy’s Ravenna FC

Eleven years after he last played a professional club match, Ronaldinho has landed in Italy with a No. 10 shirt, one final goal in mind and a comeback that sits somewhere between football fantasy and commercial spectacle.
The Brazilian arrived in Ravenna as the Italian third-tier club prepared to present him before thousands of supporters at a beachside event. Ravenna insists the 46-year-old will be officially registered as a player and appear in at least one competitive match. Ronaldinho wants to score the final official goal of his career in Ravenna colours.
But he is not joining the club as an ordinary veteran signing expected to train every day, fight for selection and play through a full Serie C season. He is also part of Ravenna’s ownership project, the face of its global marketing push and the engine of an ambitious attempt to transform a little-known Italian club into an international brand. So, how real is Ronaldinho’s return, when might he play and why has Ravenna built an entire project around him?

Has Ronaldinho officially joined Ravenna?
Yes. Ravenna announced the agreement in June, describing Ronaldinho’s arrival as one of the most significant signings in the club’s history. The club’s official announcement said he would be registered as a player and confirmed for the club’s league and Coppa Italia campaign. “Football has always been joyful for me, and I’m excited to bring that spirit to Ravenna,” Ronaldinho said after the agreement. “Let the magic begin.” Ravenna has also released a special No. 10 shirt that the Brazilian is expected to wear when he takes the field. Ronaldinho was formally welcomed by the city at a large team-presentation event in Marina di Ravenna, designed to introduce both the player and the club’s wider project to supporters.
Is this a full return to professional football?
Technically, Ravenna says it is a professional comeback. Practically, it appears far more limited. Club owner Ignazio Cipriani has said Ronaldinho will play in at least one official home match. No date has been confirmed, and there is no indication that the Brazilian will follow the workload of a regular Serie C player across the season. Ronaldinho has not joined Ravenna’s conventional pre-season preparation, and reports suggest he will play only a small number of minutes or make a symbolic competitive appearance. That is an important distinction. Ronaldinho is returning to the official team sheet, but Ravenna is not building its midfield around a 46-year-old who has been away from professional club football since 2015. The club wants the appearance to count. Ronaldinho wants the goal to count. But this is unlikely to resemble a normal playing contract.
Why was there confusion over whether he would play?
Because Ravenna initially sent conflicting signals. Before the club’s formal announcement, honorary vice-president Ariedo Braida dismissed suggestions that Ronaldinho would play in Serie C. Braida, who knew the Brazilian from their time at AC Milan, said the arrangement was a marketing initiative and argued that a professional return at 46 was unrealistic. “Ronaldinho will do a marketing event with us but will not play for Ravenna in Serie C next season,” Braida told La Gazzetta dello Sport, according to Sports Illustrated. The club’s subsequent announcement went considerably further. Ravenna said Ronaldinho would be officially registered as a player, while Cipriani insisted that he would appear in a competitive match. Ravenna’s current position is therefore clear: Ronaldinho will play.
What remains uncertain is when, for how long and under what competitive circumstances.
When did Ronaldinho actually retire? Ronaldinho’s final professional club appearances came for Fluminense in 2015. His contract was terminated by mutual consent after only a few months. His brother and agent, Roberto de Assis Moreira, formally confirmed his retirement in 2018. So the comeback comes 11 years after Ronaldinho last played professionally, but approximately eight years after his retirement was officially announced. He has continued to appear in exhibition matches, legends’ games, promotional tournaments and other football events since leaving the professional club circuit. Those appearances kept him close to the ball, but they did not carry the physical demands or competitive intensity of a league such as Serie C.
Why does Ronaldinho want to play again?
The stated sporting ambition is charmingly specific: one final professional goal. Ravenna says Ronaldinho wants to close his playing career by scoring in the club’s colours. Its promotional material describes the goal as a deeply personal final chapter for one of football’s most celebrated careers. The Brazilian has always treated football as performance as much as competition. His appeal came from the smile, the elastic movement, the no-look passes and the sense that the ball had joined him in a private joke. A brief comeback gives him an opportunity to stage one last official moment rather than allow a forgettable spell at Fluminense to remain the final line of his club career. But the partnership carries much larger commercial ambitions.
Is Ronaldinho also an investor in Ravenna?
Yes. Ronaldinho is part of the shareholder group behind the club and is expected to hold a wider management and ambassadorial role. That means Ravenna is not merely paying a retired superstar to make a cameo. The club is tying his name, image and commercial reach to its long-term project. Ronaldinho’s R10 brand is also being integrated with Ravenna. The club has released special merchandise, art collaborations and a limited-edition No. 10 shirt around his arrival. Cipriani wants the partnership to connect football with fashion, culture, hospitality and entertainment. Ronaldinho gives that strategy instant global visibility. A club that struggled to attract attention beyond Italy’s lower divisions is now being discussed across Brazil, Spain, Britain and the wider football world.
Who are Ravenna FC?
Ravenna are a historic but modest club from the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. They play in Serie C, the third level of the Italian football system, far below the global stage on which Ronaldinho spent the peak of his career. The club’s stadium holds approximately 12,000 spectators. Cipriani, a hospitality entrepreneur who acquired the club in 2024, has spoken openly about his ambition to take Ravenna to Serie A and eventually into European competition. That is a formidable climb. Italian football is filled with historic clubs fighting for limited promotion places, while financial difficulties have repeatedly destabilised teams in the lower divisions.
Ronaldinho cannot deliver promotion through a brief appearance. He can deliver attention, ticket demand, merchandise sales, commercial introductions and a degree of relevance Ravenna could not easily purchase elsewhere. The impact is already being described as the “Ronaldinho Effect”. Season-ticket interest has reportedly increased and his special shirts have generated strong demand.
Is the signing mostly a marketing stunt?
Marketing is a central part of it. Ravenna has never attempted to hide that. Ronaldinho was initially unveiled at a glamorous event in Miami rather than at the club’s training ground. His Italian presentation was turned into a beach festival. His shirt has been packaged as fashion and collectible art. The partnership is built to sell an image of Ravenna far beyond the football pitch.
But calling it only a stunt misses the strategic logic. Lower-division clubs struggle for visibility, sponsors and new revenue. Ronaldinho provides all three. His presence can open conversations with investors and commercial partners who might otherwise never notice Ravenna. The test will be whether the club converts that burst of attention into better infrastructure, stronger recruitment and sustainable sporting progress. A viral signing can fill a stadium for an evening. It cannot win promotion by itself.
When will Ronaldinho make his Ravenna debut?
No official date has been announced. Ravenna begin their Serie C campaign against Reggiana, but Ronaldinho is not expected to play in the opening fixture. His appearance is likely to be carefully selected and heavily promoted. Before he can feature, the club will need to complete the necessary registration process and ensure that he satisfies the medical and regulatory requirements applied to professional players. His fitness will also shape how many minutes he can safely play after more than a decade outside professional football. The uncertainty is part of Ravenna’s strategy. Every fixture now carries the possibility that the No. 10 shirt could appear.
What did Ronaldinho achieve during his original career?
Almost everything. Ronaldinho won the 2002 World Cup with Brazil and scored one of the tournament’s most memorable goals, beating England goalkeeper David Seaman with a long-range free kick in the quarter-final. He won the Ballon d’Or in 2005 and was named FIFA World Player of the Year in both 2004 and 2005. At Barcelona, he captured two La Liga titles and played a defining role in the club’s 2005-06 Champions League triumph. His performances were so dazzling that Real Madrid supporters gave him a standing ovation at the Santiago Bernabéu after he dismantled their team in 2005.
He later won Serie A with AC Milan and the Copa Libertadores with Atlético Mineiro. For Brazil, he scored 33 goals in 97 appearances and also collected Copa América and Confederations Cup titles. His legacy, however, extends beyond medals and numbers. Ronaldinho made elite football look improvised. In an increasingly tactical and controlled sport, he played with the freedom of someone discovering the game in real time.
What should supporters realistically expect?
A moment, not a second career. Ronaldinho is unlikely to transform Ravenna through sustained performances across a gruelling Serie C season. Age, fitness and time away from professional competition make that expectation unreasonable. But one official appearance could still become one of the most watched moments in the club’s history. Ravenna wants the attention. Cipriani wants a global platform. Ronaldinho wants one final professional goal. For a career built on making the improbable look playful, that may be enough reason to lace the boots again.
