India’s emphatic 72-run win over Zimbabwe in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup marked a dramatic turnaround in form. After struggling for consistency with the bat, the team delivered one of the most complete batting performances in tournament history. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and middle-order batter Tilak Varma revealed that a detailed review of their performances over the past year played a crucial role in the resurgence.
Heading into the Zimbabwe clash, India’s batting unit had not clicked collectively. While individual players had made contributions, there was no all-round effort from the top order.
Abhishek Sharma, in particular, had struggled significantly. Before the Zimbabwe game, he had scored just 15 runs in four matches and registered three consecutive ducks, often falling to off-spinners in similar fashion. Tilak Varma, batting at number three, was also under scrutiny, managing a strike rate of just over 118 and unable to impose his natural aggressive game.
The biggest setback came against South Africa in the first Super 8 encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Chasing 188, India were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs, losing by 76 runs. The collapse intensified questions around the team’s approach and mindset.

Against Zimbabwe, India’s batting unit responded with a historic display. All six batters who came to the crease scored at strike rates above 150. Sanju Samson was the lowest scorer with 24, while Abhishek Sharma smashed 55 off 30 balls. Ishan Kishan made 38 off 24, Suryakumar Yadav blasted 33 off just 13 deliveries, Hardik Pandya hammered 50 off 23, and Tilak Varma struck 44 off 16 balls.
India posted a massive 254 for 4 in 20 overs. It marked the first instance in T20 World Cup history where each member of the top six scored 20 or more runs at a strike rate exceeding 150. Zimbabwe managed 184 in reply, handing India a commanding 72-run victory.
After the match, Suryakumar Yadav revealed that the team had consciously decided to leave behind recent disappointments and focus on the bigger picture.
"I think we wanted to leave everything behind. We didn't think too much about what we did in the league stage or what we did in the last game in Ahmedabad. But thoroughly, we had a slide which our video analyst had made for all the batters and all the bowlers, showing what we did over the year. We saw that slide and took a lot of positivity from that. And when we came here, I think with contributions from all the batters from top till number seven, I think it was heartening to see," Suryakumar said during the post-match presentation.
Tilak Varma echoed the captain’s sentiments during the post-match press conference, highlighting the importance of mindset and confidence.
"As we discussed yesterday, just before the game, we'll go with a good mindset. And we have seen our past year of T20 cricket, how we played. So it was after seeing that video that everyone got our confidence, and that's what we discussed as a team, like we just enjoy and put the smile on, and we go all out," Tilak said as quoted by the ICC website.
The review of a full year’s performances allowed players to see their strengths in perspective rather than dwelling on isolated failures. The focus shifted from fear of collapse to collective belief.
The win has revived India’s campaign in the Super 8 stage. They next face West Indies in a do-or-die clash, with the winner progressing to the semifinals. South Africa has already secured qualification from Super 8 Group 1, raising the stakes further.
India’s dominant display against Zimbabwe not only kept their semifinal hopes alive but also demonstrated how data-driven preparation and a reset in mindset can transform performance under pressure.
