The 70-foot statue of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi in Kolkata is set to be dismantled after authorities raised serious safety concerns over its structural stability. According to an ESPN report, local residents complained that the massive structure appeared to be swaying in strong winds, prompting officials to conduct an inspection.
The statue, installed in December last year ahead of Messi’s India visit during his GOAT Tour, depicts the football icon holding the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy. It was built by fans as a tribute to the Argentine superstar and quickly became a major attraction in the city.
Following the inspection, authorities concluded that the structure’s integrity had been compromised and recommended that it be taken down to prevent any possible accident.
West Bengal MLA Sharadwat Mukherjee confirmed the development while speaking to ESPN. “The statue of the Argentine football legend was found to be unsafe.”
“We have noticed that the statue is swaying in the wind,” Mukherjee added.
The giant monument was reportedly completed within 27 days by a dedicated group of Messi fans. The installation coincided with Messi’s highly-publicised GOAT Tour of India, during which he visited Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi alongside his Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul.

Authorities are now exploring alternative locations where the statue can be safely reassembled after dismantling.
Messi’s visit to Kolkata last year drew massive crowds but also descended into chaos at Salt Lake Stadium. Fans who had purchased expensive tickets allegedly became angry after the football icon exited the venue earlier than expected.
Several spectators reportedly threw bottles and attempted to break gates separating different stands inside the stadium. Many fans accused organisers and VIP guests of monopolising access to Messi, claiming they were unable to even catch a glimpse of the Argentine star.
The unrest escalated further as some individuals allegedly tried to enter restricted zones and damage event infrastructure, including tents and goalposts. Police personnel eventually intervened and used mild force to bring the situation under control.
The developments around the statue come just days after Satadru Dutta, the chief organiser of Messi’s GOAT Tour in India, filed a complaint against former West Bengal Sports Minister Arup Biswas.
Dutta reportedly accused the former minister of misconduct, alleging misuse of tickets for the Kolkata event and claiming he faced pressure regarding the distribution of access cards linked to Messi’s appearance.
