Argentina is being represented by Ambassador Mariano A. Caucino, who is leading the official delegation. At the inauguration, he thanked the West Bengal government and the people of Kolkata for their warm welcome.

What cultural connections link Argentina and West Bengal?

Ambassador Caucino highlighted shared cultural threads, including a mutual love for football, the blue-and-white colours common to both Buenos Aires and Kolkata, and the iconic 1924 meeting between Rabindranath Tagore and Argentine writer Victoria Ocampo.

How strong are Argentina-India relations today?

Bilateral ties are at a high point. India is now Argentina’s sixth-largest trading partner, with 2025 recording a new high in Argentine exports to India, especially vegetable oils.

What diplomatic developments paved the way for this exchange?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Argentina in July 2025 underscored the growing strategic importance of the relationship, laying the groundwork for deeper cooperation across sectors.

What economic reforms were referenced at the fair?

Caucino noted that Argentina, under President Javier Milei, is pursuing economic reforms and deregulation similar to those India implemented earlier, primarily policies that helped India become one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

What business opportunities exist between the two countries?

India and Argentina share strong economic complementarity, particularly in agriculture and mining. Indian companies are already active in Argentina’s northern provinces, home to some of the world’s largest lithium reserves.

What can visitors expect at this year’s book fair?

Visitors will experience Argentine literature, cultural showcases and exhibitions highlighting the country’s rich literary heritage, alongside the fair’s signature mix of books, authors and readers from across the globe.
