A Marine Expeditionary Unit consists of four elements: command, ground combat, air combat, and logistics combat.

Typically used for evacuations and amphibious operations requiring ship-to-shore movements, the units also have ground and aviation combat components, with some trained for special operations.

USS Tripoli, based in Sasebo, Japan, is a small aircraft carrier carrying F-35 stealth fighters, MV-22 Osprey transports, and landing craft for troop deployment.

Which Ships Are Part of USS Tripoli’s Amphibious Ready Group?

The ship leads an amphibious ready group, which usually includes the amphibious transport docks USS New Orleans and USS San Diego, though their presence could not be confirmed.

The developments follow the killing of Iran's top security official, Ali Larijani, during a military strike by Israeli and US forces.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Defence Forces announced a wave of strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon, following the evacuation of residents in the city of Tyre and in response to rocket fire toward Israeli territory.

A loud explosion was reported in Beirut's Bachoura neighbourhood, resulting in six deaths and 24 injuries.

Earlier, the IDF struck Hezbollah command centers in Beirut and three rocket sites and weapon storage facilities in Beqaa.

How Is Hezbollah Responding to Israel’s Military Actions?

The operations come after additional Israeli troops were deployed in Lebanon to establish a "forward defense posture" against Hezbollah threats.

According to the Jerusalem Post, troops from the 36th Division have begun limited ground operations against Hezbollah in coordination with the 91st Division, continuing efforts to create an additional security layer for residents of northern Israel.

The Israeli Air Force reported "extensive strikes toward infrastructures of the Iranian terror regime throughout Tehran, and toward infrastructures of the Hezbollah terror organization in Beirut."

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem asserted his organization is prepared for a "long confrontation" with Israel.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that the Lebanese government would be held accountable for failing to disarm Hezbollah, adding that Lebanon would "pay increasing prices through damage to infrastructure and the loss of territory" until military commitments were fulfilled.
