Typhoon Dujuan Threatens Japan; Asian Games Equestrian Event Postponed

Japan braced for heavy rain, strong winds and possible landslides on Monday as Typhoon Dujuan approached its eastern Pacific coast, prompting Asian Games organisers to postpone the equestrian eventing competition until Tuesday.

Aichi-Nagoya, which is hosting the Games, had not experienced adverse weather at the time of reporting. However, the weather office forecast some impact later in the day, leading organisers to reschedule the competition as a precaution.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that the typhoon could bring heavy rain to eastern and northeastern Japan through Tuesday, Kyodo News reported.

Heavy Rain Warning

Dujuan is projected to pass near the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, between Monday evening and late night. The agency also warned of intense downpours from linear rainbands in the eastern Kanto-Koshin region and central Japan’s Tokai region.

A linear rainband could also form over Shizuoka Prefecture and the Izu Islands, raising concerns about prolonged heavy rainfall.

The year’s 25th typhoon was located about 110 kilometres west-southwest of Hachijo Island and was moving northeast at 20 kilometres per hour.

Transport disruptions were already being felt, with sections of highways closed during a five-day holiday period. At the Games, the eventing postponement came ahead of the expected deterioration in weather.

India’s Shooters Add Third Silver

Sporting action continued elsewhere, with India winning silver in the men’s 10m air rifle team event on Monday.

Rudrankksh Patil, Parth Mane and Himanshu Dhillon combined for a score of 1890.1, finishing behind China’s 1899.0. South Korea took bronze with 1841.4.

The result brought India’s medal tally to three, all silvers won in shooting.

The individual qualification round also served as the team final. Rudrankksh finished third with 631.8, while Himanshu placed seventh with 630.0. Both secured places in the individual final, scheduled for later in the day.

Parth finished 11th with 628.3, contributing to the trio’s silver-winning aggregate. The shooting result gave India another podium finish as organisers monitored the approaching storm and its potential impact on the Games schedule.
