Trump's Secret Exit: Why Air Force One Was Just the Decoy
The plane carrying Donald Trump was supposed to be the one everyone was watching.
It wasn't.
According to The Washington Post, Trump boarded the familiar blue-and-white Air Force One in full view of cameras after the NATO summit in Türkiye on July 8. But minutes later, the US president was secretly moved to a smaller C-32A, a modified Boeing 757 used to transport senior US officials.
The getaway was straight out of a spy thriller.
Trump and several aides were reportedly moved through an airport catering truck, which was raised to the side of the smaller aircraft using hydraulic equipment. The operation was designed to make it appear as though Trump was simply aboard Air Force One, which continued to serve as the decoy.

Why the elaborate deception?
The Washington Post reported that a credible Iranian threat against Trump triggered the operation.
Türkiye's proximity to Iran added to the security concern. The US official cited by the newspaper said the deception operation was specifically intended to protect Trump as he left the country.
The C-32A had arrived in Türkiye alongside the legacy Air Force One and a former Qatari government jet that was also supporting Trump's visit. Even some White House staff and journalists travelling with the president reportedly believed they were on Trump's actual aircraft.
A plane full of misdirection
The deception went further.
US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth also boarded the C-32A separately, using external stairs, helping make the movement appear routine.
The Washington Post found no flight-tracker data for the C-32A, although video footage appeared to show the former Qatari jet, followed hours later by the C-32A and then the legacy Air Force One.
What happened between the C-32A's landing and Trump's eventual appearance from Air Force One remains unclear.
Air Force One has played this role before
The use of a decoy aircraft is not unprecedented.
A US official told the Post that Air Force One has previously been used as a decoy during serious threats or when a president was travelling to a particularly dangerous location.
But the Türkiye operation offers a striking glimpse into the security concerns surrounding Trump. The most visible plane wasn't necessarily carrying the most important passenger.
