Russian President Vladimir Putin said supplies of Russian oil and petroleum products to the United States and global markets would benefit the world economy, following a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump.

Trump separately hailed the proposed diesel deliveries as a “big deal”, saying they would help reduce fuel prices. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, warned that easing sanctions without a clear and lasting de-escalation agreement could enable Moscow to prolong the war.

“In discussing the global energy situation, Russia reaffirmed its readiness to supply oil and petroleum products to the US and global markets. I am confident that this will have a positive impact on the entire global economy,” Putin said, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The roughly 90-minute conversation also covered Ukraine, Iran and humanitarian issues, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said.

TRUMP OUTLINES PHASED DIESEL DELIVERIES

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel, followed by another 500,000 tonnes in November and one million tonnes immediately thereafter.

A further three million tonnes would follow within a short period, depending on the condition of Russia’s diesel refineries, he said.

Speaking to reporters before leaving the White House for a midterm election campaign visit to Syracuse, New York, Trump thanked Putin for agreeing to the supplies.

“I think you heard about the oil deal with Russia. That is a big deal,” he said. “We have massive amounts of oil coming into our country, and it is diesel, which is what we want.”

Trump predicted that the deliveries, together with what he described as US “total control” of the Strait of Hormuz, would drive down diesel prices. He said lowering costs for Americans, particularly farmers, ranchers and truckers, was his “Greatest Priority”.

Zelenskyy criticised any sanctions relief for Moscow without an accompanying agreement on lasting de-escalation, describing such a move as an “obvious weakness”.

UKRAINE TALKS REMAIN UNRESOLVED

According to Ushakov, Putin reiterated that Russia’s military objectives remained unchanged while maintaining that Moscow was open to a political and diplomatic settlement aimed at achieving “a lasting, sustainable peace”.

Putin also claimed that Russian forces held the initiative across the front and that Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia would not halt their advance.

Ushakov said the leaders had previously discussed resuming trilateral talks involving Russia, the US and Ukraine after the State Duma elections. He alleged that Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow, other cities and polling stations on the main voting day had prevented an immediate return to negotiations.

“As the President said, we will now consider when these talks can resume,” Ushakov said.

He added that Trump would instruct his team to convey the relevant messages to a Ukrainian delegation in Miami for discussions with American representatives.

PUTIN URGES DIPLOMACY WITH IRAN

Iran was another major focus of the call. Ushakov said Putin briefed Trump after discussing the situation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan on Thursday.

“Vladimir Putin particularly stressed that the scope for diplomacy on Iran is far from exhausted. An agreement with Tehran is both possible and necessary,” Ushakov said.

According to the Russian account, Putin noted that Washington continued indirect dialogue with Tehran through Qatar despite harsh public statements. Ushakov said Trump welcomed Moscow’s involvement in efforts to resolve the situation.

Trump separately reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon.

LEADERS AGREE TO STAY IN CONTACT

Ushakov described the exchange as a “substantive, friendly conversation”. He said arrangements for the call began after his October 7 discussion with US envoy Steve Witkoff, as Trump wanted to personally convey birthday wishes to Putin.

Putin thanked Trump and expressed appreciation for US First Lady Melania Trump’s work on reuniting children with families separated by the war in Ukraine, according to Ushakov.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the presidents agreed to maintain personal contact, alongside cooperation between their administrations, intelligence services and other agencies.
