What began on February 28 as a US-Israeli military operation has since spiralled into one of the most devastating regional conflicts in recent memory. The Iran war has claimed the lives of over 3,636 people in Iran alone, crippled critical infrastructure, and sent shockwaves across the Middle East. As negotiations remain inconclusive, the damage and casualties continue to mount.

Over 3,636 Dead in Iran

According to Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRANA), at least 3,636 people have been killed inside Iran as of April 6, including 1,701 civilians including 254 children. But the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies separately report 1,900 people dead and over 20,000 injured.

Additionally, the Red Crescent reported 326 medical facilities damaged, leaving over 8,600 people in Tehran province struggling for urgent emergency care.

Hospitals Becoming Targets

Based on WHO, over 20 attacks on Iranian healthcare facilities have been verified since March 1, resulting in at least nine deaths. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reportedly said the Pasteur Institute "sustained significant damage." According to the Iranian Red Crescent, 307 health and emergency facilities have been damaged so far.

The Regional Death Toll

The damage caused by the Iran war extends beyond Iran. According to DD News, Lebanon has recorded 1,461 deaths since March 2. Iraq has reported over 108 deaths. In Israel, around 19 people have been killed due to missile attacks from Iran and Lebanon.

Heritage Sites Destroyed

Iran houses 29 UNESCO-listed sites and as per reports, at least 120 historical sites across Iran have been damaged by strikes as of late March, signalling cultural destruction alongside the human death toll. There is also damage to the Golestan Palace along with the destruction of the Rashk-e Jenan in Isfahan.

Energy Markets in Freefall

Global markets rallied following a ceasefire announcement. Brent crude dropped 13.3% to $94.74 after Iran’s Foreign Minister pledged safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for the duration of the truce.

What Comes Next

The two-week ceasefire holds after President Trump accepted Iran’s 10-point peace plan as a “workable basis” for negotiations. Pakistani-brokered talks begin Friday in Islamabad. While the Strait of Hormuz has reopened, the challenge remains converting this brief pause into a permanent settlement.
